Salaam alaikum,
I have yet another reminder of how journalistic integrity has all but disappeared from the mainstream American media. Just like the American writer in Yemen who had her interview butchered by Jezebel.com, we have another person who had good intentions and thought that her opinions would be expressed truthfully. (Oh, Aaminah, great niqaab’ed one, you do rock!) Then again, did you really think they were going for the truth anyway?
This article includes an eight minute response from Representative Mindy Greiling.
She wrote a letter to the editor of the Star Tribune on Wednesday, calling for Kersten’s resignation, citing “reckless journalistic standards” and “gross misrepresentation of the facts.” Her letter was picked up on Thursday by Power Line’s Scott Johnson, a friend of Kersten’s, who says publication of the letter is an “act of thuggery” by Greiling and the paper.
She also wrote a letter to the editor of the Star Tribune.
Hee-hee, she called her a thug! Go Greiling!

By the by, reading the NYT will give you ulcers. Don’t read it!

Asalaamu alaikum.
Shukran for the shout out… I cannot read the negativity and stupidity out there anymore… in particular, the NYT has become nothing more than a trash rag. Sometimes I even wonder what the value is of pointing out the errors and junk that is published in mainstream media. It would be so much easier to just go with the assumption that it is all ignorant, bigotd, and intentionally misleading. It would certainly be less effort to simply promote the rare positive and well-done reporting and send more people to those writers/media outlets (rare as they currently are). I can not any longer respond to the junk out there because it is too all-encompassing.

Walaikum salaam
No problem, ukhti wukhti. Hear, hear hon. I mean, they are the rag that lead us into the war in Iraq. This is Judith Miller’s old turf. MacFurquhar has done enough wackjob articles on Muslims. It’s like they aren’t even trying to look like they’re balanced and fair. Just feed the public a mix of distortion and scary tales from Mozzie Land! That’ll keep ‘em readin’!

From all the press coverage and right wing blog coverage the Twin Cities Muslim Community gets (flying Imams, taxi drivers, target clerks, TIZA academy, Keith Ellison, footbaths), you’d think we’re taking over and imposing sharia right and left. Alas, I’m sorry to say, the muzzie problem has been greatly exagerated. Unveiled women still freely roam the streets, pork filled hotdogs are still served at Twin’s Games and beer still flows freely at any one of our hundreds of bars in the area.
In fact, for the number of muslims in the area, many of whom are refugees, we’re causing suprisingly few problems and in fact are doing a rather good job of integrating ourselves into the american landscape.

Rahma: LOL. If they would only sit down, drink a nice cool glass of water and see that for themselves. After all, we are, what, about 1% of the American pop.? I do get tired of people thinking that hijab and halal restaurants means the end of the Western Civilization as they know it. Insha’Allah, more Americans will realize that we’re are quite intergrated and we don’t have these conflicting issues of what it means to be a Muslim American. We’re quite happy and well-adjusted.
